Automation is vital when considering how to step into the modern age in manufacturing and operations. It opens up countless possibilities and provides key benefits like efficiency, cost reduction, and safety improvements.

Now more than ever, Walbar Peabody is exploring specific areas where we can implement automation. We started by organizing our information and standards of procedure (SOPs), and now we’re evaluating where we can automate, one area at a time. While we previously relied on paper-based processes and manual tasks, we’ve made strides in shifting to digital tools and methods like 3D scanning—which has already begun transforming our operations!

Check out the benefits of automation and just a few ways we’re modernizing our approach.

Benefits of Automation

Automation offers powerful benefits to both our facility and our clients, including:

  • Increased throughput and reduced cycle times
  • Cost reduction and improved pricing competitiveness
  • Quicker turnaround times (TATs)
  • Enhanced safety for operators
  • Improved overall efficiency and productivity

As far as process improvements and building a culture of safety go, automation has been and will continue to be key in Walbar Peabody’s growth.

Our Steps Toward Implementation

Our facility is large, contains significant heavy equipment, and entails many complex processes. So how do we determine where to focus our automation efforts? We do this by:

  1. Systematically identifying areas that could be improved by automation
  2. Prioritizing tasks based on impact and feasibility
  3. Identifying and investing in necessary tools and technologies
  4. Providing support and training for employees during the transition

Fortunately, our passionate, dedicated team is eager to see improvements, so they’re open-minded and quick to learn new technology and processes.

Where We’re Leveling Up Through Automation

We’ve focused on three categories when it comes to innovating through automation. Each is crucial to delivering the main benefits mentioned above and to providing a constantly improved customer experience.

Data & Communication

From simple updates like Excel spreadsheets that perform macros to automated email notifications for upcoming tasks or deadlines, even minor changes can significantly improve our jobs and outcomes.

One major project we recently completed was creating centralized digital systems for information management. To transition from paper records to digital systems, we implemented a company SharePoint where we store all documents, news, and certifications. Learn more about how we’re bridging the past and future with technology.

Machining & Production

Historically, certain processes have required several operators over different shifts to run equipment. To reduce this, we have to start considering ways to automate these manufacturing processes. For example, pallet loading systems could be utilized on computer numerical control (CNC) machines for continuous operation.

At Walbar Peabody, we are exploring opportunities to combine machining operations. Although we’re not quite at lights-out automation (i.e., operating with minimal or no human intervention), we continue to work toward it—not in a way that cuts jobs, but to boost safety and free our operators to better channel their expertise elsewhere.

For instance, we’re considering automated strip tank lines for safety and efficiency, which would remove the operator and protect them from fumes. Simply put, the line would conduct a timed dip and rinse itself.

Tools & Technology

Additionally, we’re looking at investing in off-the-shelf tooling to improve current processes. This refers to standard, readily available tools and equipment that we can purchase and incorporate directly into our manufacturing processes. Rather than designing or fabricating custom tools, off-the-shelf options allow for faster implementation, cost savings, and immediate improvements in efficiency and productivity.

We’re introducing new technologies and fixtures to enhance manufacturing to help our operators do their jobs better, faster, and more safely—while making the facility more profitable.

Embracing Automation for Better Operations

The entire Walbar Peabody team is thrilled about the big and small changes automation has already brought to our facility—and the many yet to come. Everyone here understands that this technology will positively impact the site and operations, from streamlining their jobs to improving safety. All team members are eager to continue adopting these improvements and excited about the future!
